National Trust Confirms Closure of Crom Campsite, Newtownbutler

The National Trust has confirmed that the Crom campsite in Newtownbutler will not be reopening following a recent review of the sustainability of some of its holiday accommodation facilities.

Over the past number of weeks, the National Trust has been assessing the long-term viability of several accommodation sites across its portfolio. Following this review, it has been decided that the campsite at Crom Estate will remain closed permanently.

A Popular Camping Location

Located within the beautiful Crom Estate on the shores of Upper Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, the campsite has long been a popular destination for campers seeking a peaceful and scenic setting. Surrounded by ancient woodland, historic parkland and stunning lake views, Crom offered visitors a unique opportunity to experience one of Northern Ireland’s most tranquil natural landscapes.

For many campers and caravan owners, the site provided a quiet base from which to explore the wider Fermanagh Lakelands, including walking trails, wildlife habitats and boating opportunities on Lough Erne.

Decision Following Sustainability Review

The National Trust explained that the decision comes after carefully reviewing the future sustainability of a number of its holiday accommodation offerings. The review looked at the long-term operation, maintenance and investment requirements needed to continue running certain sites.

Following this assessment, the organisation concluded that Crom campsite would not be reopening.

While the decision will disappoint many visitors who have enjoyed camping at Crom over the years, the National Trust continues to manage and care for the wider Crom Estate, which remains open for visitors to enjoy.

Visiting Crom Estate

Although the campsite will no longer operate, Crom Estate itself continues to offer a range of outdoor experiences. Visitors can still enjoy walking and cycling trails, wildlife watching, boating activities on Lough Erne, and exploring the estate’s historic landscape.

The estate is home to one of the most important nature conservation areas in Northern Ireland, with ancient oak woodland, islands, and a wide variety of bird and wildlife species.

Looking for Alternative Campsites

For campers planning trips to the Fermanagh Lakelands, there are still a number of excellent campsites and caravan parks throughout the region that welcome touring caravans, motorhomes and tents. Check out County Fermanagh campsites
