Campsite Reviews for Rosguill Downings, Donegal

A beautiful setting over looking the beach with access too, this site is the perfect chill out spot. Even though there are statics also withing the park, it is very peaceful and quiet. The facilities were spotless and well maintained and very accessible. We booked a hard-standing pitch and were unfortunately very let down by the condition of the hard-standing pitches. They were in dire need of major maintenance as there was at least a 6inch drop from the concrete pitch to the grass & awning spot where the ground has sunken over time. When we asked to change pitch it was a big hassle and they made sure we knew that. We got the pitch next to it, unfortunately not much better though, After finally pitching up, our step was extremely dangerously placed and tilted with a drop that scared me every time i tried to get down. The awning area was so tilted that our door was hitting the top of our awning every time we opened it. On the lighter side, the grass pitches seemed quite level, dry and well maintained and were we to return, I would choose one of these and would recommend doing so to anyone thinking of booking. Hook up points and water were generous throughout the site. All in all, it is a lovely location and perfect for touring the Downings area of Donegal, just remember - don't go hard-standing, x

2 sides to this story....mainly positive but feel I have to highlight the points to know before you trek across the country to get here!

Positives:
Absolutely stunning location. Almost every single pitch has a stunning view of the sea and beach and mountains. Easily the best view we’ve had on any of our trips.
Fabulous beach with access only from the site. Just gorgeous.
Showers/toilets are very clean and spacious. Water is pumping hot. However in high season I’d imagine it gets busy - there are 3 toilets for everyone’s use plus 2 shower rooms for men and 2 for women each containing a toilet too.
In good weather there’d be a good amount for kids to do with a fabulous quiet beach, pitch n putt, tennis court and small football pitch. These are all free to use.
The reception sells pretty good coffee, hot chocolate and ice cream.
Downings has some lovely restaurants, bars, footgolf and a swimming pool.

The things to consider:
The site is very isolated. While that can be refreshing, it’s not just that the location is far out it’s that the roads to it are a dose! They are very long, narrow, bumpy and windey. With a caravan that’s scary but even driving in and out of the village is a pain. I actually got car sick every time. That said - taxis are available and cheap if you fancy a nice meal in the village.
The site had issues with electricity when we were there - it’s 16amp but we heard a lot of people complaining that their electricity had tripped a lot of the time.
This is the most annoying point for me - we booked a site with space for awning. It’s 5 Euro a night extra. There was no way we could put an awning on the pitch we were given as the awning would have been sitting at a 45 degree angle off the ground! It was on a huge slope. I complained to staff and they gave me a refund for the awning. My problem was that we had taken a load of extra stuff knowing we’d have the awning. They had no other spaces left. In the end we moved pitch next day but it was certainly inconvenient.

Summary - in good weather this site has a lot to offer especially if you don’t mind being cut off from the world and driving some torturous roads in and out of here. In the weather we got (horrendously windy and wet!) there’s not a whole lot to do except soak up the beautiful scenery and for some people that might just be enough. We feel like we should come back just to see it in its glory in a sunny weekend.
